EXPLORING
The Dunollie Castle ruins sit on the north side of town, a short hike up a hill. Not very developed, but still worth checking out. Nearby is the historic 1745 House at Dunollie. Although I've yet to visit (looks like it opened in 2011?), it looks really neat from the website. Would be good to combine it together with a visit to the castle. The catholic Cathedral of St. Columba provides a warm welcome.
EATING
Fantastic, as good as anything I have ever come across seafood! For an upmarket meal, head to Ee-Usk, (phonetic) gaelic for "fish". Great location and brilliant food. For no frills seafood from a sidewalk shack, head to the Shellfish Bar. They have a large wooden table that you can sit at elbow to elbow with other guests. A solid plan would be lunch at the shack and dinner at Ee-Usk. Plus, there are other good looking options I've yet to try.
SLEEPING
The place to be is the four-star Manor House, built in 1780 for the Duke of Argyll. Not cheap, but really first-class. Alternative to staying would be to stop for a drink (or meal) at the Drawing Room and Bar and scout out the impressive back yard bay views. There are also plenty of guest house options. Although I haven't stayed here, both Alt na Craig House and Dunheanish Guest House seem to get good reviews.
AROUND THE AREA
Use as a launching pad for CalMac ferry travel to Isle of Mull (port Craignure).
